Heard so much about this booming city and I was naturally excited. True to its luxury image, we were treated with luxury all the way from the flight (Emirates Business Class) till we land in Dubai (pick-up by a Lexus ES350) till we left. We stayed at Mina al-Salam Hotel at the Madinat Jumeirah, a 5-star resort city. Our rooms were splendid as you shall see in the pictures below and the cost - US$2,000 per night ! The resort was so huge that we travel within in small boats via a network of water canals. There were many F&B outlets including a Chinese restaurant, a Singaporean restaurant, a hip bar etc. The pool was huge. The view facing the Indian Ocean was stunning.

Our first day was for self discovery where we went about the resort grounds taking many pictures along the way. We also visited one of Dubai's most famous shopping mall - the Mall of Emirates, so huge that it even had its very own skiing slope complete with ski-lifts ! There were many familiar brands including a number of Malaysian and Singaporean brands. Prices were not much cheaper, in fact almost the same. There were many designer boutiques (Louis Vuitton, Gucci, Yves Saint Laurent, Armani, Bally, Salvatore Ferragamo etc.) including several watch boutiques (Audemars Piguet, Vacheron Constantin, Rolex etc.).

Our Zenith seminar started on the second day afternoon. It was 5 hours long showcasing all the latest novelties presented in an entertaining show comprising modern dance and music. Our third day was spent looking at the new watches and placing our orders. Everything was so beautiful and we bought almost everything!

The hospitality was so good that every little detail was looked into. We were given gifts over the days we stayed and it include a beach bag with a beach towel inside. Initially I didn't understand the meaning until we were reminded to attend our breakfast on the second day at the beach. The gift was actually meant to be used at the beach after breakfast. But as we went to breakfast late, we didn't enjoy the beach other than taking a few pictures for remembrance.

As the resort was so beautiful, I spent some free time in between meetings to take some pictures of the place. Don't think I will be able to afford going back to stay at the resort any time soon.

Have Jason, Have Surprises, Have Happiness - Happy Valentine's Day !

It's Valentine's Day again, our first as husband and wife. Instead of a romantic night out on our own, we decided to make it a group Valentine celebration. The venue of our celebration is Riblee's in Desa Sri Hartamas, a place well known for its baby back pork ribs ........ hmm .... yummy ! The place was actually suggested by Pauline as she had lunch there before and said the food was good. We trusted her choice and let her made all the arrangements. Dinner was at 8:00pm but we arrived slightly late. There we were, a whole group of us - Alex & Pauline, PJ & Lu, Yah Ching & Hen, (same table as us); David & Christine, Freemen & Chriss, Ken & Ellen, Rodney & Joanne (next table). Such merry!

Before food arrived however, there was a surprise planned for my beloved Chloe. The staff at Riblee's brought in a bouquet of red roses with a big card and I presented it to Chloe who looked surprised and pleased ! She had not expected to receive flowers that night as it was supposed to be just another gathering of friends. Furthermore, she knew I had a hectic day and she didn't saw me buying any flowers along the way. Needless to say, we all enjoyed ourselves indulging in an evening of pork ribs, gossips and picture taking.

Well, once in a while, we need to inject some magic into our lives - Have Jason, Have Surprises, Have Happiness - HAPPY VALENTINE's Day my dear !

Family Lo Sang feast - 6th Day of CNY, Feb 2008

It's Chinese New Year and we must do the " lo sang " or " lo hei ", whichever sounds better. It's a Malaysian tradition to usher the new year with good luck. It's our annual family CNY feast. This year we had our feast at Overseas Restaurant in Jaya 1, a newly opened location which is good coz there weren't many people. The food was good and everyone had a full sumptuous dinner.

A Friendly Lo Sang to usher a Prosperous Chinese New Year 2008 !

We had a pre-CNY Lo Sang with friends at the newly opened Overseas Restaurant at Jaya 1. Apparently, Air Asia just started direct flights to Vientiane last December. Only two and a half hours away, it's rather accessible. Being my first visit, I was excited that I'm going to see one of the most underdeveloped country in South East Asia. Laos as I eventually found out is actually bigger than Peninsula Malaysia alone. Landlocked among 5 other countries - Myanmar, China, Vietnam, Cambodia, & Thailand, Laos is situated just east of the Mekong River. It has a population of about 6.5 million people and Vientiane itself is a city of about 464,000 people.

We arrived around noon and stayed at the Don Chan Palace hotel, owned by a fellow Malaysian. The rooms were very modern and comfortable. At 14 storeys high, Don Chan Palace Hotel is the tallest building in Laos. There were actually quite a lot of cars besides motorcycles and bicycles on the roads, much more than I had expected given its reputation as a poor country. I was told that as recent as six months ago, there were mainly gravel roads but had since been paved with tar roads courtesy of China's charitable contributions.

Laos it seems is a very religious country although the government is Socialist. There were many Buddhist temples and monastery in Vientiane. There aren't many tourists sites in Vientiane, the famous ones are - Pha Tat Luang, the most important national monument; Patuxai, the Arc de Triomphe of Laos! I visited both sites. If I had more time, I will perhaps head north to the historic town of Luang Prabang, a Unesco World Heritage site. Was told the scenery was beautiful there and time stood still.........relatively untouched by development........no modern highrise hotels there, motorized traffic also minimal unlike Vientiane.

Meanwhile, walking around Vientiane, I have to say it's indeed very laidback. People here know how to enjoy life and they work at a very leisurely pace. Although the country is supposed to be poor, you never see any beggars here! Everyone has something to do and they all seemed contented. I was told the average monthly salary here is just a mere US$50!

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://jason-chloe.blogspot.com/2008/01/sabaai-dii-vientiane-jan-2008.html' title='Sabaai-dii ! It's the month, Chloe and I first met. And on 22 October 2007, we celebrated our 2nd Anniversary of our First Meeting ! In celebration, we made a quickie escapade to Cameron Highlands. The cool crisp air at Cameron Highlands was refreshing. We stayed at the majestic Lakehouse, an old English style mansion that sits atop a hill overlooking the "Lake" (it's actually a dam)! After checking-in, we drove towards Tanah Rata and Brinchang where we visited the vegetable and strawberries farm along the way. On the way back, we stopped at Smokehouse for a few pics. After a long day cruising up and down the highlands, we returned to our "mansion" for the night, for a romantic candlelight dinner. After dinner, we returned to our room where Chloe was to be surprised by a bed filled with red roses and I presented to her a bouquet of white lilies and white roses! She was ecstatic! Love you dear !

Oh! it's the Interactive Digital Billboard !

I was at the Mid Valley Gardens shopping mall about 3 weeks ago and guess what? So, to give offerings to the nine emperors, we went to this famous Nine Emperor temple in Ampang New Village. It's always crowded here during this time. This is my second visit to the nine emperor's temple. I was here last year to accompany my wife (then girlfriend) to pray for blessings and repay the nine emperor's "loan". Since everything had went smoothly the year before, we braved the smoke and went through the same ritual this year, praying for blessings of good health, wealth and happiness.

At the Festival of Nine Emperors, it is a culture to seek out a loan from the divine for some heavenly windfall. So, we went to the nine emperor's banker to ask for a loan. Queue was short. Service was fast. And we were given a loan on the spot. No prior approval or credit checking was required. But there is a catch, the interest rate is very high (as we could expect from any non-banking institutions), the interest is minimum 200% per annum! So, if you guys see me strike it rich next year, you knowlah where to get a loan to proposperity!

Mr. CLAYPOT

There is this place in Cheras, that serves very good claypot chicken rice. It is also the largest Sincere store ever, covering about 3,400 sq ft over two floors.

We opened for business on 5 Oct 2007, after much delay. Many of our neighboring tenants remained under renovation. We are still waiting for them to open and enliven the area. For now, traffic remains sparse but we did managed to attract many curious first timer customer. Let's hope this is a good start to another successful Sincere store!

Aunty Tham Legendary Hakka Yong Tau Foo!

Yummy, yummy! Hakka Yong Tau Foo, the Aunty Tham version is one of my favorite food. It is very time consuming, so Aunty Tham don't make it everyday. Based on a family recipe inherited from our forefathers, it is still made in the traditional way. The meat paste itself consist of 10 different ingredients! Stuffed into chilies, brinjals, bean curd, or simply flatten like in fish cake, they are first deep fried before being stewed. It taste delicious and I'm learning to make it so that I can cook it whenever I crave for it!

Year of Jackie!

Jackie Cheung was in town on 14 September 2007 for the Malaysia leg of his world tour and we were there! The concert was scheduled to start at 8:30pm but due to heavy traffic to Bukit Jalil, we were late and only reached the stadium at about 8:45pm. From the outside, we already heard the roars of the concert goers. The concert had started on time! We rushed in as it begun to rain. Once inside the stadium, it was very chaotic as everyone was moving about looking for their seats. Jackie was already there on stage singing! Finally, we found our "VIP" seats, easily 30-40 rows from the stage. Though we were far, we sat there to enjoy the concert from afar. Songs after songs, Jackie wow the crowd, from his evergreen songs, to his current songs, to his favorite songs, to his plays; he sang them all with passion. The show was supposed to end about 11:00pm when the concert goers refused to leave, and chanted, "ENCORE! JACKIE! JACKIE!........". Hearing the chants of his fans, Jackie finally emerged and sang for another hour. After performing for close to 3 1/2 hours, the concert finally ended at about 12 midnight. We later found out there were more than 30,000 people attended the concert that night!

Merdeka in JB

We traveled down south during the long Merdeka weekend to visit my sister's family who just moved into her new house in JB. While I have heard of her name before, I wasn't really a fan of hers. Her music of which I had a taste of that night was interesting but way advanced for my liking. Nevetheless, her energetic performance and the excellent dancers certainly made it an interesting show for all of us. What was suprising was we saw many celebrities and notable people (ie. Datuk & Datins) going for the concert as we queued to enter the hall. That surprises me as I didn't knew she was so popular, with the young and the old. It was to be another tiring day for us as we headed to Chungu Lake for a boat ride. The scenery was nothing spectacular, Vietnam's Halong Bay was better. Furthermore it was drizzling. An hour later, we moved on to Suwon to visit the old fortress city of Hwasong. From Suwon we proceeded to Everland, Korea's version of Disneyland! Just as we were to enter the themepark, it started to rain heavily. However, there was no turning back, and we went through the guided tour in the rain.

We ended the day around 6:00pm when we arrived at our destination - Danyang Hotel. Another shabu-shabu dinner awaited us at the hotel restaurant. We were soon to be shocked when we checked into our hotel room, an empty room with no bed! Never in my whole life have I stayed in a hotel with no bed. We panicked and searched for help only to realized that the floor mat was our accommodation for the night! As we were too tired, we slept right through to the next morning while it rained heavily outside.

Anyong Haseyo ! ", greeted us, as we walked into the Incheon International Airport of the land of kimchi. We finally arrived in South Korea, tired and restless at 09:00. There was a long queue that day and it took us almost 1.5 hours to clear immigration and collect our luggage. From the airport, we arrived at the Yeongjong Ferry Port where we took the Wolmido seagull cruise to the mainland. Along the way,we stopped by the old Chinatown of Incheon. A few picture moments later, we proceeded to the War Memorial Park. Our stomachs grumbling, we couldn't wait to have our first taste of Korean food. Soon, we reached our lunch destination, where we were treated to our first real meal for the day after the long flight - Korean Ginseng Chicken ! After lunch, the guide brought us to "Antique Street" - a tourist souvenier place. About 6:00pm, we finally reached our hotel. The Co-op Residence was near to Dongdaemun shopping area, where many of the city's fashion and accessories wholesale outlets are located. Excited, we had a quickie dinner next door and immediately wasted no time and went shopping around the Dongdaemun area. Our conquest ended around 12:00 midnight, and we were totally wrecked!

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://jason-chloe.blogspot.com/2007/08/anyong-haseyo-day-1.html' title='Anyong Haseyo ! Held at the 1Utama new wing, the Stilla event attracted quite a crowd of eager ladies waiting for their make-over sessions. The make-up session was fast and soon it was Chloe's turn to be photographed. Since that day we both wore matching white outfits, we thought, " why not have our portraits together ". That was a wise decision. We love the results. Everyone who saw the pics commented, "hey, nice wedding pics, but how come so simple one, no gowns, no coat meh ?" Cost - RM250. Location - 1U concourse make-shift studio. Clothes - our own. We were treated to a welcome buffet lunch upon arrival at mid-day. After filling up our stomachs, the main agenda of the trip was unveiled at the main function room where we spent the next 3 hours or so absorbing the wonders of Omega watches, their history, technical innovation and the new Basel 2007 novelties. By 7:30pm, we all headed to the Temasek Beach for our beach side dinner, a well spread of glorious seafood ! Watch salesmen turned singers for the night entertained us as we while away our time. It's the day I signed my life away ! On this day, we gathered together with our family members at the Registrar of Marriage at Putrajaya to officially become husband & wife. It was an emotional 20 minutes, filled with joy and happiness, as we sweared to love each other ever after. The day you sign on the dotted line is the day you truly becomes a man, as you are now responsible for the happiness of your other half. We now live our life as one - Mr. & Mrs. Jason Tham ! As it was also my wife's 28th birthday, we adjourned to our celebratory lunch soon after.

Hot summer days in Hanoi - June 2007

We had planned this trip sometime in Jan 2007. It was not exactly a dream location, but what the heck, we got cheap tickets from AirAsia then, and we haven't been to Hanoi. So about a month before the actual departure in May 2007, we did our itinerary planning and accommodation sourcing on the internet. It was a 4 days, 3 nights trip. We picked a rather new hotel in the heart of the Old Quarters - Hanoi Elegance Hotel. The pictures from their website looks good and we have to say the rooms are indeed pretty comfortable. The staff too were excellent and helpful. The weather in Hanoi was very hot and humid. We spent our time mostly walking and shopping in the Old Quarters and also visited some tourists sites. Vietnamese food was generally good but after a few days, you are certainly to miss the variety of taste of Malaysian fare. Shopping was mostly for house decorative items, oil painting, clothing & silk, etc. Taxis are not cheap, walking around is easy if you don't mind sweating. As Halong Bay was supposed to be a must see, we made a day trip there where we boarded a boat to tour some of the islands there. While there, we visited some floating villages and old limestone caves. It was a very tiring 6 hours journey from Hanoi and back.

Geneva, April 2007 - The Salon International de la Haute Horlogerie

We arrived in Geneva on 15 April 2007 by train. It was a 3 hours train ride. As it was a Sunday, all shops were closed. We checked into the Swissotel with spectacular Lake Geneva views. The SIHH watch expo is for trade visitors only and is dominated mostly by Richemont brands eg. Baume & Mercier, IWC, Panerai, Vacheron Constantin, JLC, Mont Blanc etc. As usual, we had back to back meetings from morning to evening. Unlike Basel, we didn't have to take any train, so it was easier and less hectic.

It was also my first time visiting "Watchland", the birthplace of all Franck Muller watches ! We attended the Franck Muller gala dinner featuring a concert by the legendary Tom Jones. We also attended the IWC event featuring the Da Vinci stageplay by Kevin Spacey.

Basel, April 2007 - BASELWORLD 2007

It's that time of the year again, the annual pilgrimage to Basel, in the land of watches - Switzerland ! This time, it's in April. It's also my second trip there. This time, the weather was rather hot. As usual we stayed in Zurich and not in Basel. As usual, everyday we waked up at 6:30am to get ready for breakfast by 7:00am. Get to the train station by 7:30am and board the 8:02am train to Basel. It's an hour ride. By the time we reached Basel, we hopped onto one of the many trams that brought us to the exhibition site. The crowd was tremendous. This time, I knew my way and was easy to navigate through the huge exhibition site to reach my destinations. We visited most of the big brands eg. Patek Philippe, Zenith, Corum, Breitling, Omega, TAG Heuer, Chopard etc.

With back to back appointments from 9:00am onwards, we hardly had time for lunch ! We usually ate whatever we could find inside the brand's booth as there was really no time for us to go for a proper lunch. Anyway, it was no different for me coz I don't really enjoy the food served, it's always beef, venison, fish or duck ! What about pork, chicken, prawns etc, I wondered. After the last appointment at 6:00pm, it's usually dinner with the suppliers till late. Not too late though as we had to catch the 11:00pm train back to Zurich. We stayed 4 days in Basel before moving on to Geneva for our next leg. Basel trip is no fun but sheer work !

SAWADEE KA..............Bangkok, Sept 2006

We had planned for this holiday to celebrate Chloe's birthday which falls in end June. However, due to overwhelming work commitments, the trip finally took off in Sept 2006. It was a free and easy trip and we planned our own accommodation and tour itinerary. The hotel we selected - The President serviced apartment at Sukhumvit Soi 11, turned out to be a pleasant choice. At 2000 Baht a night, we didn't expect 5-star service and facilities, but nonetheless the room was clean and the location excellent! We soon found out that the area was happening. It was about 10 minutes walk to the highly efficient BTS Skytrain - Nana station. As we walked along the road to the BTS, there were several interesting restaurants and nightspots - Contrazzi, Bed Supper Club, Zanzibar, Cheap Charlie's etc.

As this was a purely shopping trip, we spent time visiting most of the shopping destinations including the famous but hot & stuffy Chatuchak market, the ultra lux Siam Paragon, Siam Centre, the affordable Siam Square, the Bangkok version of Sungei Wang Plaza - Mabunkrung (MBK), Central @ Chidlom, etc. Also took the opportunity to visit the watch fair at Emporium Central Chidlom.

Shopping was good but could be better if we had more money! We bought lots of stuff - for him, for her, for our families. Food was in my opinion rather bland. The Thai food back home taste better! Not much choice, Thai food was all hot & spicy.

From KL to Beijing, June 2006

It was my first visit to Beijing, the metropolitan capital of China. I was thrilled. We were here at the courtesy of Zenith. Just like the luxury watch brand, everything about the trip was sheer luxury ! We were put up at the 5-star The Peninsula Beijing and were treated to the best food at 5-star restaurants serving the best Beijing cuisines. Unfortunately, I was not really a fan of Beijing cuisine as I found out during the trip. Beijing cuisine as I came to realized was very different from my regular diet of pork, seafood and chicken. Instead, there were duck's tongue (local delicacy), alfafa grass, cold yam, fish dipped in oil, & the very famous Peking duck!

Food aside, we visited a number of key tourist sites - the not-to-be missed Tianammen Square and the Forbidden City, the Great Wall of China at Badaling. Most importantly, we visited the Zenith boutique at the Beijing Grand Hyatt. It was the first Zenith boutique ever ! Elegant and modern, it reflected the Zenith spirit. We also visited some famous mausoleums of past emperors on the outskirts of Beijing.

Didn't expect much shopping but I was wrong! Wangfujing Street was like Orchard Road of Singapore, 700 years old and 1.6km long, the street is filled with shopping centres and small retail outlets selling mostly fashion items. For a good bargain, we went to the famous Xiushui Street shopping centre - the place for all your shopping needs, from souveniers to sneakers, from silk to watches, you get it and you get it cheap.

It was certainly an enlightening and enjoyable trip, opening my eyes to one of the world's largest cities!

Working in Paradise.......Four Seasons Langkawi, June 2006

It was my first visit to Langkawi. The Four Seasons Langkawi as you can see is a paradise. Facing the white sandy beach, the resort comprising mainly of individual 2-storey villas is surrounded by palm trees. Each of us had our own villas equipped with our very own backyard jacuzzi. The room was certainly a honeymoon suite with a view of the beach. A pity Chloe wasn't there with me. We stayed a night and had dinner at the restaurant by the beach. Well, forgot to add, I was there for work ! It would be great if it was for pleasure and I love to go back, if only the villa didn't cost RM1,800 !

Blowing candles at Avilion Port Dickson - Jan 2006

January - the month I get reminded how fast time had passed in my lifetime. This January is memorable as I have someone special to share my candle blowing moments. To celebrate the occasion, we treated ourselves to a night of private indulgence at the Avillion Resort in Port Dickson. It was truly magical to be able to share your special day with someone who really cares.

Christmas in Singapore - Dec 2005

It was our first trip together. Singapore was the natural choice as I was shuttling between KL and Singapore in the last 2 months for work. Chloe came down with her good friend Ellen & Ken. As I was more familiar with Singapore roads, I drove them around town. We met Ellen's Korean friend Kimmi for dinner and drinks. Went shopping along Orchard Road.

On Christmas Eve we had a very nice cosy dinner at the Crystal Jade Golden Palace. There was a huge crowd of Christmas revelers outside Paragon as we left the place. We later went to the Shangrila Hotel for some Christmas jingle time. We made our way home the very next day.
